The Customer

Tripr is a UK-based travel experience platform curating short breaks and activities focused on wellness, adventure, and food. They target solo travellers and groups seeking meaningful, expertly-led experiences rather than mass-market tourism, offering over 20,000 experiences across the country. Their positioning is around helping people make their weekends count with authentic, curated travel.

The Problem

Tripr needed to implement a travel marketplace that went beyond the capabilities of off-the-shelf ecommerce solutions. They wanted a single checkout flow that could handle three completely different product types - hotels, vital events, and bespoke Tripr-hosted or partner events - all unified into one seamless booking experience. They also needed unified search across all those different product categories with fuzzy matching and preference filtering, so customers could search by location and find exactly what they wanted regardless of product type. Standard ecommerce platforms simply could not handle that level of complexity and integration.

The Solution

As a startup with limited cash, we selected infrastructure that was just-in-time and cost as little as possible to keep running month to month. We leveraged AWS Lambda and MongoDB for the core infrastructure, which scales with demand and keeps fixed costs minimal. We layered in S16 Platform and S16 Developer to handle the complexity of unifying hotels, events, and bespoke experiences into a single checkout flow with unified search. For Tripr, we primarily tapped into our search and billing services, alongside user management, authentication, and notifications.

The differentiator is that we built on top of S16 Platform - purpose-built for this kind of complex application - rather than stitching together third-party tools. That gave us more control, flexibility, and the ability to customise deeply to handle the unified checkout across three different product types. Critically, S16 Platform is proven to scale reliably to tens of thousands of users, so Tripr had confidence the infrastructure could handle growth without needing major rewrites.
